Although you could just kill every enemy you meet, you actually get bonuses for not killing people, a novel twist for an RTS game. The variety of skills encourages creative problem solving. One of Robin's other friends, Stuteley, can throw a net over a closely bunched group of enemies, and a man named Harold Wall can bean them on the head with an apple. In one the game's most amusing moments, the purse will attract the Sheriff's soldiers who fight over the money and knock each other out, enabling Robin to sneak by. For example, Robin can leap from rooftop to rooftop, fire arrows at enemy soldiers, or throw a purse filled with coins. Each of Robin's Merry Men has specific skills that can be used to get past obstacles. What makes the missions so enjoyable is that, unlike similar puzzle-based real-time strategy games, there is no one solution that must be used to solve the problems. The mission design is, in a word, outstanding. Among these are missions where Robin must rescue captured friends from the stocks, ambush the Sheriff's convoys in search of gold to distribute to the poor, and save Maid Marian from a forced marriage to Sir Guy of Gisbourne. Fortunately, Spellbound has offered players a wide variety of scenarios to choose from. Certain missions will follow one another automatically, while others allow the gamer as Robin to pick which mission they will tackle next. Each mission advances that storyline in a semi-linear fashion. The game ships with one campaign that follows the classic story of Robin of Locksley's attempt to protect the people of England from the evil Prince John and his lackey the Sheriff until good King Richard returns from the Crusades. The Legend of Sherwood places gamers in control of Robin and up to five of his merry men as they work their way through a variety of missions in their effort to overthrow the Sheriff of Nottingham. Spellbound's Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood, the most recent addition to that roster, is a surprisingly good real-time tactical strategy game similar to much-lauded Commandos 2 and the criminally underrated Desperados.
